The Ideas

Idea 1

‘The Village’ is a project based education program that matches mentors from industry, the arts and the wider community, to schools and students.

We will develop an application that mentors can sign up to, providing details of their expertise and availability. In parallel, similar interest and requirements will be gauged from schools, opening up a line of communication between them. The objective is to inspire students to learn, and create pathways to employment by breaking down the barriers between educational institutions and the community, paving the way for collaboration between stakeholders, and encouraging greater investment in education.

  • Love it, there is so much untapped talent out there, particularly from our arts community and our elders. We must acknowledge these contributors more fully however, through residence programs, etc, as everyone has to make a living ultimately!

  • On a similar topic in an international forum one suggestion included starting such a process from within the immediate community. For example existing parents, local business people & community leaders: then, gradually broadening the perspective. Perhaps a type of TEDx within schools could broaden scope & conserve resources

  • A lot of the statements are motherhood statements. We would all like to do all of them. If a person is illiterate then everything else is useless. There has to be abig Literacy drive in Tasmania. The infant schools are the most important for kids to go on to further Learning. It would also help with discipline problems.

  • A powerful, creative suggestion, resonating with elements of several of the other ideas, all of which will require a cultural and paradigm change across our schooling systems – from compliance/control to encouraging genuine community connections. The community seems ready, even hungry for this, but is the education system?
