The Ideas

Idea 12

Create a wider understanding and acceptance of the role of parents as a student’s primary educator, and ensure they remain actively engaged throughout their child’s learning.

Through a series of ‘essential ingredients’, we will ensure that all parents understand and embrace the responsibility of being ‘first educators’. This includes developing a mutually respectful relationship with schools, the creation of a media campaign, identifying community ‘champions’ to help communicate key messages, state-wide access to prenatal programs based on discovery and play at home, close alignment with service providers, school-based programs to encourage partnerships with parents, and mobile discovery units to provide access, information and resources for all parents.

  • I would love to be involved in giving this idea wings/ legs/ whatever! I am a retired teacher, very much committed to the need to engage and involve parents in their children’s school education, and before that to support and affirm them in their role as the children’s first and most important teacher.

  • An idea requiring careful implementation: needing to cater to four broad parent attitude groups. Those who already participate, those with the means but little inclination, those without means (or believe they lack them) but wish to participate and those without means or motivation. Ideally harnessing first group’s help.
